Beijing
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Beijing offers full-time internships (40 working hours). The normal duration of an internship is two, preferably three months, although a longer internship may be possible on prior agreement.
1. We expect:
- Good knowledge of Mandarin;
- Excellent command of German (native speaker or very advanced foreign speaker) and very good command of English
- Familiarity with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and its values
- Applicants with the following backgrounds have an advantage: Political Science, Asian Studies, International Relations, Sociology or related fields.
2. Allowances and honoraria:
Due to strict financial regulations FES can not pay interns any allowances or honoraria. Interns must bear all costs (transport, including the flight to China, board and lodging) themselves. We therefore strongly recommend that applicants seek other funding in good time. There are several possibilities for funding. The following two options may be a good place to start:

3. Schedule
Internships with FES Beijing consist of two parts:
(i) Composition of a paper (~50% of working time). The topic can be chosen in cooperation with FES Beijing. Ideally, it should be a paper which can be developed into a course paper for university, besides fitting in with the work of FES Beijing.
Possible topics include: rule of law/human rights in China, social market economy, social insurance/welfare state in China, trade unions and workers rights’ in China.
(ii) Assisting in office work (~ 50% of working time):
Tasks include, but are not limited to: logistics related to conferences and workshops, writing of conference reports, documentation, office administration and support of experts and delegations.
4. Letter of invitation – Visa
FES cannot provide letters of invitation.
Interns must apply for a Chinese visa in their country of residence. If necessary, the visa can be extended in Beijing.
5. Accommodation
FES cannot provide accommodation: interns must organize their own. However, we are happy to help you with information about where to look. As the FES Beijing office is located in the Chaoyang district, close to the embassy area (see map), we advise you to look for accommodation in Chaoyang or Dongcheng districts. There is no metro station in walking distance. The metro stations closest to the office are Dongzhimen and Nongye Zhanlanguan.
